 Sun Tutorial
« Thread Started on Jan 31, 2007, 9:25am »

Here is a sun tutorial that can give some sweet suns.

1. Start off by opening a 500x500 document. (It doesn't really matter but the larger the sun the more detail you get) Hit 'D' to reset your color palette back to #000000 and #FFFFFF (Black and White). Then fill your background with black.

2. This is an optional step, it allows for a more circular sun. Go to Edit--->Preferences--->Grid, Guides and Slices and use these settings

Press Alt+' to toggle your grid on/off

3. Select your circular marquee tool (right click your rectangular one for first timers) and the while holding down Shift draw a circle that coveres most of your canvas (or working area).

4. Make sure your foreground color is: #FFA2626 and your background color is: #7A0000 on your colors palette. Now make a new layer and call it clouds. Then with your circle still selected go Filter--->Render--->Clouds

You should now have something that looks like this:

5. This gets a little tricky for first timers of Photoshop. Switch over to your channels palette by clicking on your channel button. Then click on your new channel button.

Click on your Alpha1 channel that you made and then go Filter--->Render--->Clouds and fill the cirlce area selected with black and white clouds. Then go Filter--->Render--->Difference Clouds.

Now, Ctrl+Click the icon that shows the Alpha1 layer image. If you get this warning:

Go to Image--->Adjustments--->Brightness/Contrast. Then use the options there to lighten your image. Don't lighten it to much or you will spoil your image!

Once you have an area selected by Ctrl+Clicking switch back over to your Layers Palette with the area still selected and click on the layer that you have your clouds on.

5. While you have your area selected take your magic wand tool and then while holding down Alt, click outside in the black area somewhere. The makes it so that all your work will be done, inside the circle.

Now take your brush tool and in the brushes tab in the top of the screen, select the big fuzzy 200 pixel brush and then tick the texture and put it on these settings

Then adjust the settings to 30% Opacity and 50% Flow. Now hit 'D' to reset your color palette and use your brush on the sun. Do not make one area to dark

Aim for something like this:

6. After you have finished with the brush tool press 'Ctrl+D' to deselect your area. Then 'Ctrl+Click' your clouds layer to bring up the circle selection.

The image is still a little flat hey? No matter. Once you have your circle area selected again, go Filter--->Distort--->Spherize and put the settings at 100%. Your sun looks a little round now. Duplicate your clouds layer by hitting 'Ctrl+J'

7. Time to add a bit of texture. Select your top layer of clouds and then go Filter--->Texture--->Grain and add the following settings:

Now, with this grain filter, it creates a black line around the outside of our sun that we don't want. So lets get rid of it!

'Cntrl+Click' your clouds copy layer to load its selection then hit 'Add layer mask' button down the bottom.

Hold 'Cntl+Shift+D' to reload your selection after you layer mask. Then got Select--->Modify--->Contract and contract it by 5 pixels.

Then go Select--->Feather and feather it by 10 pixels. Now go Select--->Inverse and then hit 'Alt+Backspace' to fill the selection with black.

Now on your top clouds layer hit 'Ctrl+E' and merge your two clouds layers together.

8. Our sun is nice and round and hydrogen looking like now hey? Time to add some rays to it. Right Click on your clouds layer and the put the following blending modes on. The blending mode color is [b]#FFC22E

Now, copy this layer and deselect all the blending styles on the copied layer then add the following:

9. Now to finish off, make the sun look special. Make a new layer above all the other layers and press 'D' to reset your color palette.

Now, go Filter--->Render--->Clouds and cover the entire canvas in clouds. Then on the blending mode of the clouds layer set it to 'Color Dodge' and now your sun is complete. This is how mine turned out!

Goodluck!

Your's is the exact same as his. :)

He has the "Texture" Ticked, and that's the window he made the screenshot on.

Click "Texture" and it will look exactly like his. ;)
Just close that out and don't worry, keep following the steps, you've done nothing wrong.

Select your brush tool.
Then on the top pallette you should see "Opacity: 100%" and "Flow: 100%"

Use the arrow near them to adjust them. :)

When you type the colors you don't include the # :)
