Segmented Text Effect

Segmented Text Effect

Summary:
In this tutorial, we look at how to create a stylish text effect that represents itself in segmented notches. In this particular tutorial, the line for the letter is pretty thin, but by simply changing the brush size, you can achieve a much thicker line for your letters.

Step-By-Step Instructions:
1. Open a new document in photoshop. Set height/width to 300x300 px.
2. Create a new layer. Name it "Letter".
3. Select the Pen Tool and create a path for your letter. Here we created a path for the letter "C".

4. Choose black as your foreground color. Select the Brush Tool and make sure the brush size is set to 9 px.
5. Select the Path Selection Tool and right click the path. Choose "Stroke Path" from the pop-up box. Click OK.
6. Your path should now have the stroke from your brush.

7. Create a new layer underneath the "Letter" layer. Name this new layer "Segment Line".
8. Choose black as your foreground color. Select the Brush Tool and make sure the brush size is set to 5 px.
9. Select the Path Selection Tool and right click the path. Choose "Stroke Path" from the pop-up box. Click OK.
10. Your path should now have the stroke from your brush. (you won't see this stroked 5 px path yet, because it's on the layer below the "Letter" layer and the stroke is thinner than the 9px stroke from the "Letter" layer).
11. Click the Delete key to delete the path from the canvas.
12. Click the "Letter" layer in the layers palette so it is the active layer.
13. Select the Eraser Tool. Zoom in on the letter and begin erasing segments along the length fo the path.

14. When you are done erasing, you should have something similar to the following:

15. Right click the "Letter" layer from the layers palette. Choose "Blending Options" from the pop-up list.
16. Set the properties for "Bevel and Emboss" to the following:

17. Set the properties for "Cover Overlay" to the following:

18. Click OK and you should have something similar like below.

19. Right click the "Segment Line" layer from the layers palette. Choose "Blending Options" from the pop-up list.
20. Set the properties for "Bevel and Emboss" to the following:

21. Set the properties for "Cover Overlay" to the following:

18. Click OK and you should now have your segmented text effect.

(Try experimenting with thicker paint brush sizes from "Step 4" and "Step 8" to create a thicker/bolder type.)
