Broken Glass Tutorial

Writing by admin on Sunday, 28 of January , 2007 at 5:03 am

Learn how to give your photos a broken glass effect.

Step 1) Open a new document, fill it with white.

Step 2) Now, take the ‘Magnetic Lasso Tool’ and make something that looks like this.

Step 3) Press CTRL + T to enter Free Transform mode and rotate the layer to your liking.

Step 4) Create a new layer and use the ‘Magnetic Lasso Tool’ to make a new shape. Then fill it with black and rotate it around a bit. Do this a few more times to get something that looks like this:

Step 5) Now find a picture that you would like to reflect off the broken glass.

Step 6) Duplicate that layer so there are as many image layers (all with the same image in them) as there are shape piece layers (arrange them so the image layers are above the shape pieces, kind of like this, just for organization, see below)

Step 7) Now click on the image layer above the first shape and CTRL + Left (Mouse Button). Click the shape layer below it and then press the Add Layer Mask  button (at the bottom of the Layers Palette).

Do this for each shape you made.

Step 8.) Hide each shape layer.

Give a Drop Shadow Layer style to each image layer.

Step 9) You can add a background if you like.

and you’re done!

“Step 7) Now click on the image layer above the first shape and CTRL + Left (Mouse Button). Click the shape layer below it and then press the Add Layer Mask button (at the bottom of the Layers Palette).”

When adding the layer masks to each picture image, it hides all of the pictures and just shows the black shapes. I did it all like you showed in the example of all the Layers except it just doesn’t look like what u have when applying the shadow.. I’m very confused.. can you please help me?

The background of the shape images are suppose to be black and the image is suppose to white, as you see in step 7, is yours the same as that? When you apply it, you should be get a white broken glass, did you get that?

When you say that the shape images are supposed to be black and the image is supposed to be white - my shapes are black but I am not getting the white image. And when I tried applying the Layer Masks the mask on the right hand side in the layers is completely black and has no white shapes to them.

How did you create Shape 1? It looks like their colors were inverted shapes from the other Shapes.

I can create all the layers and make the shapes, but the very bottom one you did not say how to create that one.
