How to import video into Gif-file

Author: John Lamphere More by this author

If you have a small video clip, then it's possible to import it into .Gif and use it as part of an animated banner or as a stand-alone cool signature.

This tutorial will work in Image Ready 7.0 or higher. Note that Image Ready CS compresses the .gif to a smaller file size (almost 3x smaller) than Image Ready 7.0.

1. Open Adobe Image Ready.

2. Prepare the video clip in .mov format.

3. Click File > Open...(Ctrl+O) and select your video clip in .mov format. (I used the preview to Star Wars episode III).

The following dialog box will open:

Open Movie

Select the option you need (from the beginning to end uses the whole movie, selected range is only a part). And don't forget to limit frames to decrease size of .gif file (the larger the font size, the smaller the frame will be, and accordingly the poorer the quality and the smaller the size).

4. The next step is to set the timing of your video clip. Image Ready normally sets it too fast. So we have to decrease it. Simply select all frames in your animation window by clicking the first frame, holding shift and clicking the last frame and then click on the timing. Set it at about 0.12.

Set Frame Delay

5. Check to see if your animation runs smooth in Internet explorerIE (Ctrl+Alt+P).

6. Now it's time to change the movie to the needed size and set its necessary rotation. Link all layers (if you check all the boxes you will be able to see the target near small pictures in layers palette).

Layers Pallete

Now use Edit > free Transform (Ctrl+T) on any of layers and set desirable size (when resizing, hold down Shift button to save aspect ratio).

7. Now save the result (File > Save Optimized)

You can also add decoration and paste the movie as a frame in the picture. Se what i've done:

Star Wars

Quick Question: What is the solution to get a nice transparency after creating a image? I've got a lovely one, but the ugly gif adds a nasty white border around it. Any ideas as to a solution? Example: Try looking at it on a dark background. Crying or Very sad Any Suggestions? Help?

Yes I do, and when I look at the file types supporters then, I don't see *.mov. And when i try to open any mov it says that that file type is not supported. Pretty frustrating, cause you would think that a newer version would have this feature as well. Edit: This is what I see Maybe I need a plug-in?

Try to do this in ImageReady 7.0 or ImageReady CS. By the way, are you sure that your .mov files are not corrupted, and that you can play them in QuickTime player?
I use Imageready 9.0 and I can't get it to work either. if I look at the supporterd files when I try to open anything, it doesn't say *.mov anywhere. Do I need a plug in? Or am i just screwed? Please help me cause i'd love to give this a try!

I love this tutorial, but unfortunatly it doesn't work for me 100% I can make/resize the videos to gif. But my problem lies where everyone else's did. In making a banner/icon I cannot get the video to be animated. I get the still frame of the first clip. Here is what I've done: I opened my.gif movie and my .psd that I wish to move it to- -- I go the to animation bar on my .psd and make sure that my "Create Layer for each new Frame": I then make sure all my .gif layers are linked and selected: -- I then "Drag" and "Drop" it to the .psd and get this: It doesn't even add new frames for the movie, let along play it. I would really appreciate some kind sweet soul to help me out. My msn email is lmabee@gmail.com Thank you so much, Laura - the no-workie- noob Embarassed

Try to paste your sig background to the PSD you are working with. Then move it to the back and resize all frames except your background. Is this what you wanted to know? If not, tell more - can't get you problem

Hey if anyone wants to help, I'm still having problems with this tutorial (getting the entire gif to play over my sig background). Anyone who knows how to tweak the settings to make it work is welcome to give me ideas. I'm at my wits end trying to get it working by myself =S

You have to convert it. Only problem is that windows practically owns wmv, and trying to find a video converter that supports wmv or mpeg TO mov isn't easy. And the only ones I've found aren't free. My advice is to download Fraps (www.fraps.com) and use that to record whatever you want (it saves in avi format but be careful-- files can get huge). Then you can convert avi into gif using a converter (mine isn't free, but i'm sure there's free ones out there). My problem is, I can't get my .gif to work with my jpeg signature background. Any help would be appreciated. 8S

This is very simple you need to "import" video into gif-file 1. open your image in adobe imageready, 2. then "import" video............................ or just import video if you only going to use the movie it will convert it to framed images then you can add text or graphics. kind regards Cool
