Ok this tutorial will show you how to make a simple circular pattern using the plastic wrap and lens flare filter to your advantage.

Open photoshop cs up. Create a new psd document with the following settings:

Name: Lens Flare Ball Pattern
Width: 500 pixels
Height: 500 Pixels
Resolution: 72 Pixels/Inch
Color Mode: RBG Color 8 bit
Background Contents: White

Double click the layer to unlock it and name this layer 'Lens Flare Ball Pattern'. Grab your fill bucket tool (G) and fill in the layer with black.

On this layer add a plastic wrap filter by going to Filter >> Artistic >> Plastic Wrap with these following settings:

Highlight Strength: 20
Detail: 15
Smoothness: 15

You should now have a black background with a white blob in the centre of the canvas. Now go to Filter >> Distort >> Polar Coordinates with these following settings:

Polar Coordinates: Rectangular to Polar

Now we are going to add our lens flare to the centre of the piece. Make sure you do place it in the centre or you might end up with a different result than mine. Well centre it as much as you can. Ok, go to Filter >> Render >> Lens Flare with these following settings:

Brightness: 200%
Lens Type: Movie Prime

Now we are going to smooth it out by making it more circular. Go to Filter >> Distort >> Spherize with these following settings:

Amount: 100%
Mode: Normal

Now we are going to apply an effect to make our pattern stand out. You can optionally play around with the filters at this stage or carry on with this filter. Go to Filter >> Brush Strokes >> Ink Outlines with these following settings:

Stroke Length: 4
Dark Intensity: 20
Light Intensity: 10

Now to add some color if you wish. Go to Image >> Adjustments >> Hue/Saturation or alternatively click CTRL + U. Use these following settings if you dont choose a color yourself:

Colorize: Checked
Hue: 212
Saturation: 24
Lightness: 0

This section is optional but I think it adds a nice pattern to our piece. Open a new document 2 wide by 2 high. Now zoom in 1600%. Grab your pencil tool and select master diameter to 1 pixel and hardness to 100%. Make black your foreground color. Now make the top left and bottom right black and the top right and bottom left should be white.

Now go to Edit >> Define Pattern, and name your new pattern and click ok.

Now right click on our layer and choose blending options, now click pattern overlay and choose our new pattern and set the opacity to 60% and then change the blend mode to 'Overlay', now click ok to apply.

This is our basic to our Lens Flare Ball Pattern, now where you take this is entirely up to you. Mess around with filters and settings, use it in your wallpapers and work. I hope you enjoyed this tutorial.

End Result
