- iPod Theme Tutorial
First lets find ourselves a royalty free image. You can get good images at one of the following:
http://www.webshots.comhttp://www.istockphoto.comhttp://www.ablestock.comWhichever image you use is entirely your choice but make a good choice as its gotta look like the iPod theme where they are dancing.
For this demo I am going to use this picture.
http://www.zombiefx.net/tutorials/source.phpYou do not need to worry about text over people as after all all we are doing is using his outline and filling the rest in with solid black. Right click and save this image to My Documents >> My Pictures.
Ok, so we now have our source image. Start photoshop up and go to
File >> Open and browse through to My Documents >> My Pictures where we saved our image. Double click the image layer and unlock it and rename to 'Source'. Add a new layer and place
below the source image and fill with white.
If you want you can crop is so its a bit smaller but dont resize the image just yet.
Now we are ready to begin. Get your pen tool and make sure its on 'Paths' and
NOT 'Shape Layers'.
You are going to cut around the man using your pen tool, it doesn't have to be perfect as it will be later filled over. So cut round him quickly but the best of your ability. For advanced users it should take you around 5 minutes or less.
Make sure you close the anchor point when you have gone around him.
NOTE: We are cutting around him to get rid of the background. So when you are done right click and choose make selection. Now hit delete.
We should now have the guy and a white background. You can use the eraser to smooth off any edges etc.
Hide the background to show the transparency [Checkered Background] and make a new layer above the source image. CTRL + Click on the source image, now on the new layer, fill the selection in with the fill bucket and fill it with black which is #000000 in hex code.
Now hide the source image and we should have a black silhouette of the man.
Dont deselect, if you have then go to
Select >> Reselect and now go to
Edit >> Define Custom BrushEnter the name of your new brush, something like iPod Solhouette is fine. Now you wont have to cut this one out again and have it in your brushes which is just a click away.
Now make a layer just above the source image and just below the silhouette. And fill this with a color as you wish, make it a cheerful color, check some of the other artwork done by Apple for colors.
Our next objective is to create the iPod and place it. To do this is simple, just create a rectangle and fill with white, then create a small rectangle at the top of the iPod which indicates the screen. The touch sensitive wheel is optional. Add it if you want to. Now with each of these shapes I added a Gaussian Blur to them. The radius I used was 1 pixel.
To make the curly waves, which will be our wires to our earphones, simply grab the pen tool and make sure again its on Paths, now make your curly waves and right click when you are happy with them, and choose
Stroke Path. Use the pencil tool or the brush for your line. Brush tends to give a smoother feel than the pencil but its entirely your choice.
When your lines are in place dont hesitate to grab the 'Delete Anchor Point Tool' and erase your anchor points and leave your lines alone remaining on a seperate layer.
Then we add a breaker just before where the 2 lines for the 2 seperate headphones split. Just a simple rectangle with a slight curve. The earphones are simply one small rectangle underneath a cirle in which
is the ear piece.
Now as for the font to use for this, the official font is Myriad but I cannot distribute as I payed for it and can get fined for distributing it without permission. So best off buying it or using another font.
